How We Work

Our Methodology

Every commission at Lanna Atelier begins with the same orientation: understanding what the owner values about the piece before deciding what, if anything, to do. A watch can be important for any number of reasons — its maker, its age, its previous owners, or the simple fact that it still runs and the owner would like it to continue doing so. These are different starting points, and they lead to different conversations about appropriate work.

From that starting point, we work through the same process regardless of the service: assessment, discussion, agreed scope, work undertaken, and return with documentation. Nothing is hurried. Each stage waits on the one before it.

Where a piece falls outside our area of competence, we say so. We would rather direct an owner appropriately than take on work we are not positioned to do well.

Assessment

We look at the piece carefully, note its condition, and speak with the owner about what they are hoping to achieve.

Discussion & Scope

We present the options clearly, including cost and timeline. The owner decides what to proceed with — or not.

Workshop Work

The agreed work is carried out. If anything unexpected arises, we pause and contact the owner before continuing.

Return & Documentation

The watch is returned with a written record of all work undertaken. The owner keeps this as part of the piece's history.

Service One

Antique Pocket Watch Refurbishment

A patient approach to pocket watches and pendant timepieces, recognising that each has often passed through several generations of careful keeping. Includes disassembly, cleaning by hand where appropriate, replacement of mainsprings with matched alternatives, and reassembly with regulation. Chain and bow are checked and repaired where needed.

Owners are welcome to bring the original case and any documentation they hold, as this often helps us choose the most respectful path of work for each piece.

Service Two

Dial Restoration & Refinishing

A service for watches where the dial has darkened, cracked, or lost paint over time. We undertake conservation cleaning first, attempting to retain the original surface wherever it remains sound. Where refinishing is the only reasonable path, we work with a small studio that recreates the original colour, indices, and printing using historical references.

The decision between conservation and refinishing is always discussed openly with the owner before any work begins, and we are happy to recommend leaving a dial untouched if that is the kinder choice.

Service Three

Movement Replacement & Conversion

For watches whose original movement has been damaged beyond reasonable repair, we can fit a comparable replacement caliber chosen to suit the case dimensions and the owner's intended use. We discuss the available options in detail, explaining trade-offs between mechanical and quartz alternatives.

We always note in writing that the movement has been changed. This service suits everyday watches that an owner wishes to continue wearing while preserving the case and dial they value.

Standards

Workshop Protocols Across All Work

Secure Custody

Watches in commission are stored in a locked, climate-controlled space. They do not leave the premises without explicit instruction.

Written Agreement

The scope of every commission is set out in writing before work begins. Changes to scope require owner agreement.

Period-Matched Parts

Replacement components are sourced to match the period and caliber of each movement wherever available and practical.

Provenance Preserved

All departures from original condition are documented. The watch's history remains honest and traceable.

Interim Communication

Where unexpected findings arise during work, we pause and contact the owner. Nothing proceeds without renewed agreement.

Minimum Intervention

We attempt the least invasive appropriate approach first — cleaning before replacement, conservation before refinishing.
