Siriporn Mahasak

Bangkok · Pocket Watch Refurbishment

My grandfather's pocket watch had not worked in over twenty years. I was not sure it could be brought back, and the workshop was honest with me that it might not be possible either. Three weeks later it was running — carefully, correctly — and I received a full account of what had been done. I was not expecting that level of explanation.

Robert Henriksen

Oslo, Norway · Dial Restoration

I came in expecting to be told the dial needed to be refinished. Instead, they tried cleaning first — and recommended leaving it once they had done that. The patina was retained and the watch looks far better for it. The timeline was a little longer than first estimated, but they let me know at each stage. I would return for any further work.

Tanachai Charoenpong

Chiang Mai · Movement Replacement

My father's watch had a movement that was beyond saving. They explained the situation clearly and walked me through two replacement options — one mechanical, one quartz — without pushing me toward either. I chose the mechanical. It runs well, and I have a written note of what changed. That matters to me for when I pass it on.

Yuki Matsumoto

Kyoto, Japan · Pocket Watch Refurbishment

I was in Chiang Mai for three weeks and brought in an English pocket watch I had been unable to have properly serviced at home. The workshop saw it quickly, gave me a realistic account, and completed the work before I left. I appreciate that they brought the original documentation I had with it into the conversation — they clearly read what I gave them.

Kamolwan Phetsirisuk

Lampang · Dial Restoration

I came in expecting a straightforward refinish and was told that the dial still had enough of its original surface that cleaning could retain most of it. I had not considered that option. We went ahead with the conservation approach and the result is better than I imagined — it still looks its age, which is what it should look. Very considered process.

Andrew Laird

Edinburgh, UK · Movement Replacement

A small dress watch of my mother's that I wanted to wear but could not have repaired economically at home. They found a compatible movement and fitted it neatly — the watch looks entirely itself. The documentation of the change is thorough. I found the whole experience straightforward and the workshop easy to deal with by email in advance of my visit.

In Detail

Three Pieces, Three Stories

An 1890s Swiss Cylinder Pocket Watch

Service: Full refurbishment · Duration: 4 weeks

The Situation

A Swiss cylinder movement, unsigned, dating from approximately 1890. The owner had received it from an aunt who had kept it in a drawer for thirty years. The mainspring was broken and the movement had not run in memory. The case was intact; the bow needed re-soldering.

The Work

Full disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning of non-blued steel parts, hand cleaning of blued components. A mainspring of appropriate length and strength was sourced. The cylinder escapement was in reasonable condition and required adjustment rather than replacement. Bow re-soldered and case polished lightly at the owner's request.

The Result

The watch ran reliably within approximately four seconds per day on delivery — good for a movement of this age. The owner received a full written account of all parts touched and the regulation readings. It is now worn regularly.

"I did not expect to be able to wear it. I am glad I asked."

A 1940s French Travel Watch — Dial Restoration

Service: Dial conservation + light refinishing · Duration: 6 weeks

The Situation

A small French carriage clock style travel watch from the 1940s, with a white enamel dial that had cracked in one corner and lost paint around two of the hour markers. The owner had been told elsewhere that full refinishing was the only option.

The Work

Conservation cleaning removed grime and revealed that the original surface was sound except at the crack and two marker areas. We stabilised the crack with a consolidant and referred the marker restoration to our dial studio partner, who matched the original enamel painting. The surrounding surface was not touched.

The Result

The dial retains its original surface with two discreet areas of careful restoration. Under normal light, the repairs are not apparent. The owner was given photographic documentation of the work and kept the option to do nothing further open at each stage.

"They were patient about explaining what was possible before touching anything."

A 1960s Japanese Dress Watch — Movement Conversion

Service: Movement replacement (mechanical) · Duration: 3 weeks

The Situation

A slim Japanese dress watch from the mid-1960s with an original movement that had seized and suffered internal damage. The case and dial were in very good condition; the owner wished to continue wearing it.

The Work

We presented the owner with two options: a slim Japanese mechanical replacement caliber of comparable dimensions, and a quartz alternative. They chose the mechanical. The new movement was fitted, tested, and regulated. The work was completed within the original timeline estimate.

The Result

The watch is now worn daily. The movement change is noted in the owner's documentation. The case and dial remain entirely original. No external modification was made to accommodate the replacement movement.

"A practical solution handled in a considered way."
